Best Films of the Decade - #30: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Ang Lee's master opus recalls a time when adventure didn't rely on the most sophisticated special effects, but simply the ability to tell and story well. That's what the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ultimately boils down to. The fact that it enjoyed such cross-over appeal without the presence of any marketable American stars is further testament to Lee's story-telling talent. Wise but sparing use of flashback and backstory exposition reinforce the film's simple but reliable three-act structure. It is a gorgeously composed piece of film, visually breathtaking and beautifully scored.
