One Category at a Time: Best Sound Mixing

Name recognition goes a long way with the sound branch. Most nominees in any given year have been nominated before. Bearing that in mind, here are my (mostly wrong) advance predix:

Poised to be one of this summer's big movies is Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. The only mixers that I know are attached to the project at the moment are 4-time nominee Tony Dawe (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) and 6-time nominee Paul Massey (3:10 to Yuma). Epic scope and battle sequences are an asset, and if Robin Hood follows in the footsteps of Gladiator, Scott's sound crew may be on their way to the Kodak.

Paramount has a couple of tentpoles coming out this summer, one of which is The Last Airbender (based on the popular cartoon), which seems to me like it'll either be a hit or it'll suck, big time! Seeings as it's written and directed by one-hit wonder M. Night Shyamalan, I'm leaning towards the latter, but poor quality never stopped films like Transformers or Wanted from popping up here, and if the movie turns out to actually be good, it'll only help the chances of Oscar winners Chris Munroe (Black Hawk Down), Randy Thom (The Right Stuff), and 11-time nominee Rick Kline (Memoirs of a Geisha).

A more reliable box office draw for Paramount is Iron Man 2, a follow-up to the frankly awesome 2008 summer thrill ride. Oscar winner Mark Ulano (Titanic) returns as production mixer, and I wouldn't be surprised if 4-time winner Christopher Boyes (King Kong) and 1-time nominee Lora Hirschberg (The Dark Knight) reprise their roles as rerecording mixers from the first movie as well. NB: The first Iron Man didn't get nominated here, but we can only assume it just missed.

No word yet on who the mixers will be for Christopher Nolan's Inception, but stylized action in a money-making and possibly awards-worthy film seems like reason enough to call it for a Sound Mixing nod. Just call it a hunch.

But no matter how brilliant any mix may be this year, the one I'm rooting for all the way is Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, for one reason and one reason alone: Kevin O'Connell (Transformers). The poor man has waited long enough for his Oscar already. Every new nomination he adds to his infamous tally (now 20) but doesn't win is like salt in the wound. Can you hear me, Academy? Give the man his Oscar! Ok, ok, I'm sure I just completely jinxed his chances, but seriously, how many Oscars can we really expect a viedogame-based movie to win? I'll still be in O'Connell's cheering corner all year long, especially if he and his co-mixers Beau Borders and Peter Lindsay get nominated. Hope springs eternal!

Predicted 5:
Inception
Iron Man 2
The Last Airbender
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Robin Hood

Also consider: ??? for The A-Team, ??? for Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Mark Taylor et. al. for Green Zone, ??? for Salt, Tod Maitland et. al. for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Michael McGee et. al. for Tron: Legacy, ??? for True Grit, Ron Bartlett et. al. for The Way Back.

I've got to hand it to you, your predictions are rather unique. I don't know anyone else who is predicting the Best Sound Mixing Oscars before the films even come out.
