One Category at a Time: Best Supporting Actress

A hearty congratulations to all the other nominated ladies, because we know who's winning this on March 7.
Congratulations to Penelope Cruz for turning on all the old men in the Academy with her breast-clutching, hair-biting, ass-jiggling performance in Nine. Doesn't take a geen-ee-us to see why they voted for her. She's fun to watch, but it really should have been Marion Cotillard representing Nine in this category. If only Weinstein hadn't botched her campaign with a greedy Lead Actress bid.

Congratulations to Vera Farmiga for playing the ambiguous point of reference to George Clooney in Up in the Air. Their chemistry is palpable, and Farmiga exposes her character so subtly that you can't even notice it the first time you see the movie.

Congratulations to Maggie Gyllenhaal for hitting the campaign circuit and making the most of her role opposite this year's eventual Best Actor winner. The performance may not be anything special, but she does it well, and it's about time she got herself a nomination.

Congratulations to Anna Kendrick for her comedic but realistic portrayal of youthful ambition and the fears that all young people bare. She serves as a necessary antithesis to Clooney and Farmiga's more worldly characters, but never feels out of place.

Congratulations to them all, but there's just no way they can compare to the winner. She gave the performance of the year.

Will/should/must win: Mo'Nique, Precious
