Doubt - Review

A few quick thoughts:

The acting is impressive, but it takes more than great acting to make a great film, and this particular film doesn't quite break free from its theatrical roots (it's based on Shanley's own play) to become a "bonified movie", as opposed to a "movie based on a play". The random use of Dutch angles seems like a failed attempt at making the film feel more cinematic, and the (intentionally) maddening ambiguity of the story manages to underwhelm at the picture's conclusion. Fortunately, a strong crop of performances makes Doubt watchable and engaging, if somewhat unsatisfying in the end.

Oscar chances abound for the film's cast, and maybe Shanley for Adapted Screenplay, but I don't see this as Best Picture worthy. But that never stopped the Academy before, and Doubt's SAG nod gives it momentum, so we shall see...
**1/2 out of ****
